Gunther Kern started cross-country skiing as a biathlete, competing on a mountain division biathlon team in the German army. In high school and as an undergraduate, he spend his weekends teaching downhill skiing and guiding backcountry ski trips. In his 20s, he competed on the German NATO reserve officers team in orienteering, swimming, and military obstacle course racing.
His coaching experience includes coaching Bill Koch skiers for 7 years, coaching track and field/cross country running with the Waltham Track Club for 10 years, and a Karate team for 7 years. He is a certified Level II NENSA and USSA L200 cross-country skiing coach. Gunther has an interest in training concepts that focus on developing strength and good skiing technique while maintaining a healthy body. He likes to explore the outdoors in the winter on a pair of skis or crampons. In the summer he enjoys ocean kayaking, surfing, mountain biking, and rock climbing.
